Holiday Wedding Ideas

September 14, 2012

It’s that time of year when the weather is getting colder and the leaves are changing colors. Our holiday wedding season is kicking into gear and we are excited to share some of our favorite design ideas from past and future weddings for the holiday season!

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the holiday atmosphere for your wedding is in the design details and decor.  There are a ton of options out there that add a touch of the holiday spirit without being overly cheesy.

For our upcoming October and November weddings, several of our brides are choosing to incorporate small holiday details such as pumpkins, apples, and pine cones as place cards /place card holders and as part of their centerpiece arrangements. These crafty items add visual interest to the table design and although simple, they pack a big punch when combined with beautiful linens and lots of candles. Speaking of candles, simple items such as lanterns mixed in throughout the tablescapes can add warmth and variety to the tables. We have even seen many of our couples use different size, color, and shaped lanterns throughout the space to add even more depth to their design. Whether you choose to keep the same design on each table or mix it up from table to table is a personal preference.

Weddings taking place during the winter season are always so much fun to design because of the endless number of ideas there are to incorporate the warmth and glitz of the holidays!  Some ways our winter weddings have brought the holiday feel into their reception include a working portable fireplace (yes, these do exist and can be rented!), large, cozy lounge furniture set-ups, and over-the-top glitzy Christmas trees.  Below you will find pictures from a wedding with that added all of these touches as well as some fabulous sparkly white and silver linens below which truly set the winter wonderful vibe for the event. Along with the festive linens, this bride’s table arrangements incorporated tree branches that were spray painted silver and draped with white orchids and crystals that gave her reception space an even bigger WOW factor. Candles are another great inexpensive option to warm up a space. Using a variety of vases with floating candles makes for a very  simple, yet elegant centerpiece. Add small arrangements of white hydrangeas with the candles and you’ve just created a beautiful winter white centerpiece.

Food is another great way to get your guests in the holiday wedding spirit!  We’ve raved about late night snacks in our previous blogs, but this is stepping it up to a new level. Who doesn’t love warm gooey grilled cheese bites with tomato soup shooters on a cold winter day? Passing comfort foods around to your guests, such as these grilled cheese bites or milk and cookies, are great ways to wrap them up in the holiday season and leave them with something to talk about (and chew on!).

S’mores have come a long way from the classic campfire. Although we  love the classic campfire set-up (a great year-round addition for outdoor receptions), we love this creative idea for making s’mores if you are having an indoor wedding. It’s as simple as a planter’s box, some rocks, and a few sternos. The aroma of golden marshmallows and melting chocolate smushed between two graham crackers will have your guests drooling and lining up for their turn at this do-it-yourself station. This is a great item to have if you plan to have children at your wedding, but don’t get us wrong, sometimes the adults like it more than the kids 🙂

Hot Chocolate bars are a fun and interactive way to treat your guests. You can’t beat over-sized marshmallow cakes, peppermint sticks, chocolate shavings, and cinnamon to add to the warm taste of the hot chocolate. Don’t think we’ve forgotten about you adults – a nice bottle of Bailey’s will liven up that cup of hot chocolate in a heartbeat. 😉 Another great element to incorporate is an Espresso Cart. Some of you might be wondering, what is an Espresso Cart? It may just be one of the greatest gifts to events. It beats the old, over-done coffee station and allows your guests to create the coffee of their choice. With someone manning the machine at all times, guests can order at their pleasure flavored coffee, shots of espresso, and more!  If you’re looking for a great Espresso cart, contact Casey at Event Espresso.

Another interesting way we have suggested our couples incorporate the holiday theme into their wedding is through the guestbook. This past December one of brides used ornaments as her guest book. As her guests arrived, they wrote their message to the newlyweds on an ornament and then hung it on the tree. It was a clever way to add extra decoration to the room and a great memory and way for the bride and groom to relive their wedding each Christmas. We have also seen the finger print guestbook used and for the holidays, a Christmas tree has become the popular choice. However, as this option grows in popularity, we’re starting to see other unique backgrounds used outside of the normal “tree” guestbook.

As we have mentioned above it’s all in the details! Seasonal wedding favors are a great addition to your holiday wedding. For fall, the below picture of acorn ornaments wrapped around mini pies were the finishing touch that brought it all together. We always suggest to our brides to use design elements that mean something to you as a couple. Not only did these acorns and mini pies add in a seasonal touch, but it also represented the couple and where they were married (since Raleigh is known as the City of Oaks). In addition, the pies were hand-made by the bride’s mom from the bride’s grandmother’s special recipe and a little note explaining this personal and sentimental tidbit was attached to the favor .

These iced  gingerbread bride and groom cookies are another holiday favor we have seen and loved!

These are just a few of our favorite holiday ideas.   We can’t wait to see what this holiday season has in store for our brides : )

Love the cookies and milk trend. Hopefully cooler weather will help reverse the strapless gown trend as well!
